Research activity in Benthic Ecology
Research activity focuses on microphytobenthic biodiversity with a special emphasis on marine benthic diatoms and their potential role as bioindicators, primary production in water column and sediments, respiration in soft sediments, sediment ecology.
Studies aimed to evaluate the benthic ecosystem functioning in sediments subjected to different types of anthropogenic impact and different environments (Adriatic Sea, transitional systems, subpolar areas).
More recently researches aim to assess the effect of increased CO2 in the marine environment on diversity and functionality of benthic communities, focusing on the impact of a possible leakage of CO2 stored under the seabed on benthic assemblages.
Earlier researches have been performed on the benthic-pelagic coupling by studying vertical fluxes of particulate material and the biodiversity of microphytoplankton collected in a sediment trap.
Computer skills: use of Windows Office, Statistics programs (Grapher, Primer, STATISTICA, R), interpretation of the O2 microprofiles (PROFILE version 1.0).
Utilization of the main Microbiology Laboratory equipment, especially optical and epifluorescence microscopes, scintillator analyzer, depression filtration systems, ultracentrifuge.
