A Joint European Research Infrastructure Network for Coastal Observatories (JERICO)
Research. The JERICO (“Towards a Joint European Research Infrastructure Network for Coastal Observatories”) project is an Integrating Activities (“Support to Existing Research Infrastructures”) action that is being financed under the Research Infrastructures part of the “Capacities” work programme of the European Union’s 7th Framework Programme (FP7).
ActionMED: Action Plans for Integrated Regional Monitoring Programmes, Coordinated Programmes of Measures and Addressing Data and Knowledge Gaps in Mediterranean Sea
Research. ActionMED is funded by DG ENV/MSFD Action Plans/2014. The project started in November 2015 and has a duration of 15 months. The main objective of the ActionMed project is to support the development of regional action plans and best practices for the integrated monitoring programmes, coordinated programmes of measures and the filling of data gaps for Mediterranean marine waters and thereby improve the implementation in the next steps of the Marine Strategy Framework Directive (MSFD).
Adriatic Ionian maritime spatial planning (ADRIPLAN)
Research. The project will deliver a commonly agreed approach to cross-border MSP in the Adriatic-Ionian Macroregion, considered as a whole and more specifically through two Focus Areas (Northern Adriatic Sea; Southern Adriatic / Northern Ionian Sea).
ARGO-ITALY - Italian contribution to global ocean monitoring
Research. ARGO-ITALY is the Italian component of a worldwide in situ global observing system, based on autonomous profiling floats, surface drifters, gliders and ship-of-opportunity measurements. It is primarily focused on the Italian seas, the Mediterranean and Black seas, and includes observations of temperature, salinity, currents and other water mass properties. BALLAST WATER MANAGEMENT SYSTEM FOR ADRIATIC SEA PROTECTION (BALMAS)
CINEL: Circulation and water mass properties in the NorthEastern Levantine
The main goals of this project are to measure the currents and water mass properties in the northeastern areas of the Levantine Basin (Mediterranean Sea) and to study the complex circulation features governing the dynamics near the coast and in the open sea. It is proposed to use low-cost satellite-tracked drifters to measure currents in the near-surface mixed-layer as well as floats and gliders to measure subsurface currents and profiles of physical and biogeochemical parameters.
COCES-II (Coastal Ocean Circulation Experiment off Senegal)
The general objective of the COCES-II project is to investigate the coastal dynamics off the coast of Senegal, a region strongly dominated by coastal upwelling, using drifter data, satellite observations and numerical simulations. Specific goals are:
E-AIMS (EURO-ARGO Improvements for the GMES Marine Service)
The overall objective of the project is to improve the European contribution to the international Argo observing system and to prepare the next scientific and operational challenges for in-situ monitoring of the world ocean. The main objective is to prepare the evolutions of Argo floats for the next decade: improved reliability and life time, telecommunication capabilities, biogeochemical observations, deeper measurements, under ice operations in the polar seas, sampling of marginal seas.
ECOSS - Ecological Observing System in the Adriatic Sea: oceanographic observations for biodiversity
OGS is participating in the Interreg Italy-Croatia project “ECOSS - Ecological Observing System in the Adriatic Sea: oceanographic observations for biodiversity”. There are ten partner institutions from Italy and Croatia, collaborating under the leadership of the Italian National Research Council’s Institute of Marine Sciences (CNR-ISMAR) towards achieving the main goal of the project: the establishment of the ECOlogical observing system in the Adriatic Sea - ECOAdS.
Establishing and operating an Ocean Data Interoperability Platform (ODIP)
Research.In order to remove barriers hindering the effective sharing of data across scientific domains andinternational boundaries, it is proposed to initiate and operate an Ocean Data InteroperabilityPlatform (ODIP) which will include all the major organisations engaged in ocean data managementin EU, US, and Australia. ODIP is also supported by the IOC/IODE who will participate in itsimplementation and operation, closely linking this activity with its ODS project.
European Marine Observation and Data Network (EMODnet) Biology
EMODnet Biology contributes to the European Marine Observation and Data Network (EMODnet) which is a consortium of organisations within Europe that assembles marine data, data products and metadata from diverse sources in a uniform way. The main purpose of EMODnet is to unlock fragmented and hidden marine data resources and to make these available to individuals and organisations (public and private), and to facilitate investment in sustainable coastal and offshore activities through improved access to quality-assured, standardised and harmonised marine data.
European Marine Observation and Data Network (EMODnet) Chemistry
OGS-NODC is the scientific coordinator of EMODnet Chemistry. EMODnet (European Marine Observation and Data Network) is the long term marine data initiative supported by the European Commission since 2009 to ensure that European marine data will become easily accessible, interoperable, and free on restrictions on use.
European Marine Observation and Data Network (EMODnet) Data Ingestion
OGS-NODC promotes the use of EMODnet Data Ingestion Portal for submitting new data. The European Marine Observation and Data Network (EMODnet) consists of more than 160 organisations that together work on assembling, harmonising and making marine data, products and metadata more available to public and private users. This Data Ingestion portal facilitates additional data managers to ingest their marine datasets for further processing, publishing as open data and contributing to applications for society.
FAIRSEA - Fisheries in the AdriatIc Region – a Shared Ecosystem Approach
The central focus of the the FAIRSEA project is the fisheries sector, an important economic activity in the Adriatic Sea also for its strong cultural, social and economic role in regional coastal communities. The general objective of the Project is to enhance the conditions for implementing innovative approaches for the sustainable management of the Adriatic Sea fisheries. This is achieved also thanks to the exchange of knowledge and the sharing of good practices among partners and beyond.
Gliders for Research and Ocean Observation and Management (GROOM)
The objective of the GROOM project is to design a new European Research Infrastructure that uses underwater gliders for collecting oceanographic data. This new infrastructure shall be beneficial for a large number of marine activities and societal applications, which can be related to climate change, marine ecosystems, resources, or security and which rely on academic oceanographic research and/or operational oceanography systems.
HarmoNIA - Harmonization and networking for contaminant assessment in the Ionian and Adriatic Seas

MEDITERRANEAN SEA ACIDIFICATION IN A CHANGING CLIMATE (MEDSEA)
The project intends to estimate the impact of ocean acidification in the Mediterranean Sea, at organism and ecosystem level, and the consequences at socio-economic scale. The role of OGS concerns the participation to studies on the responses of planktonic organisms to possible alterations and to the modelling of the carbonatic system and of the main biogeochemical cycles in the pelagic environment under different scenarios of climate change. http://medsea-project.eu /
MyOCEAN2: OCEAN MONITORING and FORECASTING. Providing Products and Services for all marine applications
Research. MyOcean2, is the followup of the EU FP7 project MyOCEAN that is responsible for the development and pre-operational validation of the Ocean Monitoring and Forecasting component of the GMES (Global Monitoring for Environment and Security) Marine Core Service. MyOCEAN aims at providing intermediate and final users with the forecast and analysis products and offers an essential tool to actors in the field to better understand the ocean “machine”.
ODIP-2: Ocean Data Interoperability Platform-2
Research. The new phase of Ocean Data Interoperability Platform (ODIP-2) project contributes to the removal of barriers hindering the effective sharing of data across scientific domains and international boundaries. ODIP-2 aims to implement the EU/USA/Australia/IOC-IODE coordination platform to achieve the interoperability of ocean and marine data management infrastructures, and to promote coordination through several joint EU-USA-Australia-IOC/IODE initiatives. ODIP-2 is supported under EU HORIZON 2020.
Operational Ecology: Ecosystem forecast products to enhance marine GMES applications (OPEC)
Il progetto si propone di estendere le metodologie di oceanografia operazionale e di assimilazione di dati, attualmente implementati solo a livello di componenti fisiche e, parzialmente, biogeochimice, anche al campo degli ecosistemi marini , con attenzione quindi anche alle dinamiche degli organismi di livello trofico superiori, alle reti trofiche, ed agli indicatori di struttura e funzionamento ecosistemico previsti dalle nuove direttive comunitarie in campo di tutela dei sistemi marini.
Pan-European Infrastructures for Ocean and Marine Data Management (SeaDataNet II)
Research.The overall objective of the SeaDataNet II project is to upgrade the present SeaDataNet infrastructure into an operationally robust and state-of-the-art Pan-European infrastructure for providing up-to-date and high quality access to ocean and marine metadata, data and data products originating from data acquisition activities by all engaged coastal states, by setting, adopting and promoting common data management standards and by realising technical and semantic interoperability with other relevant data management systems and initiatives.
Policy-oriented marine Environmental Research in Southern EUropean Seas (PERSEUS)
Research. The PERSEUS research project provides state-of-the-art expertise combining the specialized knowledge of both marine and socio-economic scientists from Europe and beyond, coming together towards a common goal: the Good Environmental Status of the Mediterranean and Black Seas. PERSEUS is based on four pillars: new KNOWLEDGE, new TOOLS, Science-based POLICY, Engaging the USERS. This 17M€ EC FP7 project involves over 400 scientists. OGS is one of the leading institutions of the project.
Research into Impacts and Safety in CO2 Storage (RISCS)
Within studies on CO2 emissions from storage sites, the objective of the Project RISCS
RITMARE Sub-project 7. Interoperable Infrastructure for the Observation Network and Marine Data.
The Interoperable Infrastructure will enable all the project partners, according to their particular requirements, to share and implement a common environment for data management and distribution. The design of the infrastructure will take into account practices and projects of the various communities participating in RITMARE, as well as tools, standards and models they developed in their life.
Strengthening common reaction capacity to fight sea pollution of oil, toxic and hazardous substances in Adriatic Sea (HAZADR)
Il progetto si propone di stabilire una rete transfrontaliera per la prevenzione dei rischi in ambiente marino e la gestione delle emergenze allo scopo di ridurre il rischio di inquinamento del mare Adriatico. Si vuole inoltre definire, qualora non sia presente, e rafforzare, dove già esiste, una comune capacita' di reazione da parte delle regioni adriatiche in caso di incidenti in mare e/o sversamenti di oli o materiali tossici nell'area.
Sub-seabed CO2 Storage: Impact on Marine Ecosystems (ECO2)
ECO2 è un progetto collaborativo integrato a larga scala. Il consorzio di ECO2 è costituito da 27 partners, con sede in 9 nazioni europee, di cui 24 istituti di ricerca, una fondazione indipendente e due entità commerciali.
TOSCA (Tracking Oil Spills & Coastal Awareness network)
The TOSCA project aims to improve the quality, speed and effectiveness of decision-making process in case of marine accidents in the Mediterranean concerning oil spill pollution and search and rescue (SAR) operations. 12 research institute of four European countries (Italy, France, Greece and Spain) contribute to give the authorities a useful decision support tool necessary to face marine emergencies.
TREzze e CORalligeno dell’ALto Adriatico: valorizzazione e gestione sostenibile nel Golfo di Trieste (TRECORALA)
progetto di Ricerca: Lo scopo del progetto TRECORALA è quello di ampliare le conoscenze biologiche sulle trezze e sui fondali a coralligeno del Golfo di Trieste e di individuare linee guida per la gestione, tutela e valorizzazione di tale patrimonio naturale rafforzando l’attrattività e la competitività dell’area e contribuendo alla salvaguardia della biodiversità. Attraverso informazioni sullo sfruttamento alieutico verranno effettuate proposte gestionali riguardanti alcune risorse di particolare interesse commerciale.
Vectors of Change in Oceans and Seas Marine Life, impact on Economic Sectors (VECTORS)
VECTORS aims to improve our understanding of how environmental and man made factors are impacting marine ecosystems now and how they will do so in the future.
