The OGS Section of Oceanography at Warehouse 26

Part of Warehouse 26 in Trieste's Porto Vecchio will house the Section of Oceanography of the National Institute of Oceanography and Applied Geophysics - OGS. The proposal was made this morning during a meeting between the Mayor of the Municipality of Trieste, Roberto Dipiazza, and the Councillor Giorgio Rossi, with the President of OGS Nicola Casagli and the General Director Paola Del Negro. The top management of OGS was immediately grateful and satisfied with the proposal of the Municipal Administration, which allows both to give more space to the research activities of the Section and keep its proximity to the sea.

The urgent need of the Institution was in fact to provide the Section of Oceanography with larger and more usable areas, given that, in order to carry out all their activities, the researchers and their laboratories are divided between the sea site in Santa Croce, where the biochemistry and biology laboratories are located (in need of modernisation), the offices in via Beirut in Trieste, where the activities of some of the Section's working groups are located, and an entire building in the main site of Borgo Grotta in Sgonico.

The space left by the Section of Oceanography in Borgo Grotta, once vacated, will allow the other research Sections of the Institution (Geophysics, Centre for Seismological Research and Centre for Management of Maritime Infrastructures) to reorganise and expand their offices and laboratories.

In the coming weeks, the technical offices of the OGS and the municipal administration will continue to work on the initiative, which the parties hope will be defined soon.
